Abstract
A forum to consider the pros and cons of weathering steel is reported. design consderations covered at the forum included expansion joints, design details, and environment. Maintenance considerations covered inlcuded water flushing, and cleaning and painting of steel.it was noted that weathering steel is an important construction material which, with proper use, has its place in the bridge construction industry. It was pointed out that engineers must be educated as to the proper use of weathering steel. Further research is needed in providing guidance on tunnel condition, and to determine threshold levels for adverse effects due to airborne chlorides.
