Abstract

A new energy absorbing highway barrier utilizing the plastic deformation of corrugated metal arch elements was developed utilizing scale model testing. This barrier is unique since it will stop and hold the vehicle if it impacts the nose but will redirect it if it impacts the side. The barrier uses no cables for lateral stability so some lateral displacement takes place in angled and glancing impacts thereby reducing the impact forces.
