This volume of papers represents the results of discussions in the COST (European Co-operation in Scientific and Technical research) C6 working group, which had been examining policy definitions for pedestrians and safety, with their implementation. Papers in the first part consider national experiences in policy making and implementation, in the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Belgium and France. In the second part issues in policy making are put forward, including barriers to promoting pedestrian transport; town planning; traffic calming; liveability in the city centre; parking and speed management; and mobility plans. A concluding section concentrates on international comparisons, and street network management for the future. For abstracts of the papers see C 26764 - C 26783 (ITRD E118897 - E118916).
