Abstract

This paper is concerned with the economics of ballasts and associated circuitry necessary for discharge lamps. The author discusses the different types of circuitry used, making particular reference to the economic advantages obtained by using capacitors. Problems associated with low-pressure lamps are discussed together with the advantages of a newly developed semi-conductor circuit. Mention is made of motorway lighting and of the effect of capacitor tolerance on the variation of power factor.
