IP (internet protocol) communication systems and traffic control systems have been developed. However the following improvements are needed for thesystem to come into wide use in Japan: cost-effective updates to existingsystems; additional functions for various traffic conditions such as rapid changes of traffic flow; and new vehicle detectors which can be installed inexpensively. Recently, new devices such as a compact IP router, wireless communication devices and a passive infrared vehicle detector have beendeveloped, and new functions introduced. This paper provides an overview of the cost-effective system and the lessons learned from system deployment efforts to date. For the covering abstract see ITRD E134653.
