Abstract

The results of the research conducted under NCHRP Project 8-27 are contained in this report. Because several related yet distinct topics are covered in the research, the findings are presented in four chapters: Chapter Two presents the findings on the characteristics of the handicapped population including the local, regional, and national incidence of transportation handicapped people and important subgroups or market segments of the handicapped population. Chapter Three presents the research results on the travel characteristics of handicapped people including current trip-making characteristics, the potential demand or need for additional travel, and factors affecting the amount of and need for travel. Chapter Four contains the research findings on alternative transportation solutions including their costs, utilization, and impact on mobility. Chapter Five presents the results of the cost-effectiveness of existing transportation services for handicapped persons. (Author).
