Abstract

This paper introduces and discusses a range of environmental problems cause by road traffic, and reviews in general terms the success of, and continuing need for, research in tackling them. Environmental protection cannot be an absolute requirement, and the level at which it can be provided must depend on the importance attached to the environmental impact, and the cost, in its widest sense, of the remedy.
