Abstract

A specially appointed panel that contributed to a National Academies study assessing the role of science and technology in counterterrorism advocates a transportation security system with multiple layers of protection, each safeguard reinforcing the others. The panel also calls on the Transportation Security Administration to work collaboratively to build security into transportation operations; to conduct and marshal research and development with a systems perspective; and to provide technology guidance, dissemination, and evaluation. The complete recommendations of the panel are published in TRB Special Report 270, "Deterrence, Protection, and Preparation: The New Transportation Security Imperative."
