Abstract

Structure and size of the German road network, vehicle mileage and basic traffic management systems in operation are briefly described. Conventional road traffic control is under the responsibility of public authorities, it is financed by public funds. New, up-coming ITS services which focus individual information and appear as add-ons to the conventional systems will be operated on a private basis driven by market forces. As a key arrangement to facilitate public-private partnerships the Economic Forum Transport Telematics was founded by the Minister of Transport. The implementation of new ITS services is to complement the existing systems, which will be extended and improved. The main technical components more or less ready for advanced ITS applications are the digital road map, RDS/TMC, GSM based communication systems, satellite based positioning systems, and navigation systems.
