Abstract

The New Zealand Transport Strategy is part of the government policy driven development agenda for New Zealand with a strong sustainability imperative. It provides guidance to the land transport sector, including those allocating funding on what implementing the strategy might look like. The repeated themes from the New Zealand Strategy in its treatment of the strategic objectives and principles of sustainability, integration, responsiveness and safety are: 1.improved transport system performance long term; 2. reduced reliance on private motor vehicles; 3.promotion of modes other than road vehicle use; 4. improved energy efficiency; 5. reduced adverse effects. The ability of Transfund to apply funding to give effect to land transport strategy generally will depend to a large extent on how well transport authorities develop their strategic policy and strategy making in alignment with the New Zealand Transport Strategy.
