Abstract

Crash cushions were developed because a large number of vehicle fatalities occurred when the vehicle left the road and struck an obstruction at the roadside. This paper provides a brief overview of the evolution of the evaluation criteria used to certify crash cushions for use on the U.S. roads. Experience has shown that these performance specifications have indeed led to devices that save lives in many parts of the world.
