Abstract

This paper presents designs for the transportation crash protection of children, the elderly, and the handicapped, who share possibly decreased neuromuscular control, bone strength, and local tissue load tolerance in comparison to healthy young adults. The designs utilize inflatable compartmentalized systems for load distribution and reduction. A design of an inflatable protection system for the elderly hip, often broken in a fall, is presented. These designs have not yet been built.
