Abstract

Data between 1992 and 1997 (inclusive) was used in this study which examined crashes involving pedestrians crossing to and from tram safety zones; boarding and alighting trams at unprotected tram stops; and being struck by trams at tram safety zones; and crashes involving vehicles colliding with the concrete prows of tram safety zones. The study found that of 109 accidents involving pedestrians struck while boarding or alighting trams, 16 were struck while boarding and 84 while alighting (9 unknown). There were 100 accidents involving pedestrians standing at tram safety zones being struck by trams. Finally, of the 53 crashes where vehicles hit the tram safety zone prow as the first object hit in the crash, 75 percent resulted in the vehicle rolling over. (A)
