Abstract

Background information is provided indicating the seriousness of vehicle impact. The changing or dynamic nature of the field is observed by considering innovations of the last five year: that have had a significant effect on safety level. Major difficulties that arise when one attempts to design for impact attenuation are examined and an approach is suggested to overcome the problems, the use of a unit crashworthy element. Different restraint systems are recommended.
