Abstract

The Canberra Central Program is a coordinated and cooperative approach to creating a thriving and vibrant city centre. Issues being addressed include improving access to and through the city. There has been considerable investment in articulating the vision for the future of the city centre by both the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and Commonwealth Governments. The ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA) is turning the investment into action by managing and promoting projects to support the vitalisation of the City centre. The cooperative work of the National Capital Authority responsible for City Hill precinct, and the ACT Planning and Land Authority responsible for the planning and development of the broader Canberra Central area, are significant features of the project. Three key transport studies provide significant information about the feasibility, implications and results of changes to access to and within the city centre. The evaluation and assessment of options and alternatives within these studies has been positively influenced by the strength of the vision for the city. The studies provide a basis on which to commit to significant changes that will lead to an improved and accessible city centre environment.
