Abstract

Longitudinal ventilation has recently been adopted in several different forms and the basic aerodynamic characteristics of each is described. Criteria are given for determining the maximum length of one-way tunnel requiring no artificial ventilation in terms of traffic density and speed, cross-section of tunnel and meteorological factors. A similar basis is given for the maximum length of tunnel for artificial ventilation.
