Abstract

This paper critically evaluates the existing situation of road accidents in Jordan by searching into 10 years of police road accidents records and correlating such statistics to all responsible road organizations in the country through conducting a comprehensive survey by means of a questionnaire. The aim of the questionnaire was to investigate the education and experience of the Jordan government's highway and traffic engineers who are working on road accidents, the data they have available and their attitudes towards accident reduction. A new approach, which can be used to specifically define the road accident situation in a typical third world country is presented. A specific definition of the problem highlights the scale of the problem together with the need for developing a constructive program for the prevention and reduction of the frequency and severity of road accidents in developing countries.
