Abstract

In 1997 a European Memorandum of Understanding for international exchange of traffic data was introduced and largely supported. The Memorandum of Understanding confirms that development of international traffic data exchange shall be based on DATEX, and it establishes an organisation that enables the users to influence the developments. Recently the number of DATEX based links between traffic information centres has started to grow rapidly. This is an important step towards the creation of a backbone of traffic information flow that can supply a host of different traffic information services with the factual information needed. Expanding the DATEX network to handle more local information and enhancing DATEX to be able to deal with information about public and multi modal transport will add to the available services.
