Abstract

A description of PROMET PROject for the Management of European Traffic is given of the context, objectives and approach of the PROMET project, aninitiative in the frame of the Trans European Transport network, addressing the motorway corridor between Slovenia and Italy. The project, active in years 2007-08, is based on the cooperation of the National Public Authorities, road operators and technology providers. The major goals are to increase road safety, traffic efficiency and provide additional comfort to the drivers, by enhancing the interoperability and continuity of services. Traffic Management and User information are the key elements of this on going work. Some relevant project activities are described, starting from theimplementation of an international data exchange link between the existing Traffic Control Centers. A major aspect is the definition of joint intervention plans in case of adverse conditions or traffic congestions; another relevant area involves the detection of travel times across the border, using microwave transponders. The project also relies on the implementation of traffic monitoring sensors along the infrastructure, the extension ofTMC services, and the diffusion of variable message signs to inform the users.
