Abstract

The ITS program is in a real-world application stage as evidenced by the sales of in-car navigation systems having reached 2 million units in conjunction with the Vehicle Information and Communication System service which have started up along expressways across the nation. To achieve the ultimate objectives of ITS of safe, smooth, efficient and environmentally sound surface transportation, further effort for ITS program development is focusing on the «platform» which forms the framework of socially and economically functional and beneficial ITS, and on emerging advanced ITS technology development. This paper summarizes the current domestic effort as well as describing international cooperation.
