Abstract

In its role as an organising authority for public transit in the Ile de France Region, the Syndicat des Transports Parisiens has undertaken a concerted effort (with transport partners including the RATP - Paris national public transport company, the SNCF French national railway and private bus companies) to improve the quality of service offered to passengers, especially in the field of multimodal information, as this need has been clearly expressed by travellers. The approach contains the following elements: (1) co-ordination of static information at transfer points; (2) development of real time multimodal information: exact schedule announcements; and (3) the creation of a remote information system for travellers available through Minitel, telephone, fax and computers. The objective is to permit users to be informed at all times of the different means of travel available to them and their respective operating conditions, in order that the user may select the best accurate solution: mode, itinerary, schedule, and eventually adapt their selection in the course of their trip in the event that problems arise. This paper presents the state of implementation of the « Multimodal Information Agency » (Agence Multimodal de l'Information).
