In the light of the present economic climate any method of cutting costs is welcome, especially in the category of fuel consumption of trucks and trailer combinations. Although the diesel engine is less heavily penalized than the equivalent gasoline engine, any saving is worth while especially when large annual mileages are involved. This article tried to bring some new trends to light as well as reminding the truck operator of some more familiar ones. Trials of aerodynamic add-on devices have shown promise, if car is used to maintain the same cruising speed used before the device was fitted to the vehicle. Otherwise any improvement tends to be counterbalanced by the increase in potential top speed.
