Abstract

This report reviews briefly the DOT research into cycle routes between 1975 and 1983, and then gives a detailed account of the research into the development and use of the cycle routes in Cambridge, Canterbury, Exeter, Kempston (Bedford), Nottingham, Southampton and Stockton. The research aimed to establish the effects of continuous cycle routes and networks in typical cities, particularly the effects on levels of cycle use and cyclist safety. The report describes how the routes were implemented and reports the measurements of cyclist flow, attitudes of users and the effect of the routes on cyclist safety. (A)
