Cycling, the economic implications on retailing.

Abstract

This paper begins by giving an impression of the spatial Dutch retailing structure. This gives some background to the data that IMK-REA (Instituut Midden- en Kleinbedrijf, afdeling Ruimtelijk Economische Advisering) has gathered on the modal split for shopping trips in different kinds of shopping areas in the Netherlands. The paper presents the share of the following transport modes in shopping trips: (1) car; (2) public transport; (3) pedestrian; and (4) bicycle. The paper estimates the share each transport mode contributes to the overall turnover of a shopping centre. The paper presents both some characteristics of different transport modes, and their influence on the transport mode choice, especially for shopping trips. Finally, the paper explores a few possibilities for strengthening the bicycle role in the economics of shopping areas in particular.
