The aim of this project is on one hand to estimate the proportion of helmet users a particular year and on the other hand to estimate changes in usage from one year to another. The measurements of 1991 were carried out through observations of cyclists in 21 municipalities in Sweden. They concentrated on the following categories of cyclists: young children (up to 10 years), elementary school pupils, adults cycling to and from work and cyclist using public cycle paths. The results show that 33% of the small children (up to 10 years) and approximately 20% of the elementary school pupils wore bicycle helmets. Among adults cycling to and from work and cyclists observed on public cycle paths, approximately 4% wore helmets. All in all, the measurements show that usage among children stagnated between 1990 and 1991, while there was an increase among adults cycling to and from work and cyclists using public cycle paths. The report also gives the result distributed according to gender and size of municipality. (A)
