Abstract

Since 1988, observational studies of bicycle helmet usage in Sweden have been carried out annually. The aim is to estimate the proportion of cyclists to estimate the change in usage from one year to another. Measurements were carried out through observations of cyclists in 21 municipalities in Sweden during the first two weeks in September. Measurements were concentrated on the following categories of cyclists: young children (up to 10 years), children in nine-year compulsory schools (7-15 years), adults cycling to and from work and cyclists on public cycle paths. The result of the study 1993 shows that the wearing rate for adults (commuters) was 4% and for cyclists on public cycle paths 5%. The results show that the stagnation in children's wearing rates during the last two years now seems to have passed. Both child categories have increased their wearing rates compared with 1992. Adults (commuters) and cyclists on public cycle paths, however, remain on the same level as in 1992. In the report, the results are also analysed according to gender and to the size of the municipality. (A)
