Abstract

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE DAIMLER-BENZ AIR BAG SYSTEM CONSISTING OF 4 BASIC COMPONENTS: A SENSOR, A GAS GENERATOR, THE AIR BAG, AND A KNEE BOLSTER. THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SYSTEM WERE STUDIED IN MORE THAN 2000 TESTS: NOISE PRESSURE-LEVEL TESTS DURING INFLATION, SIMULATED CRASHES AT VARIOUS SPEEDS WITH OCCUPANTS OF DIFFERENT SIZES, FULL-SCALE IMPACT TESTS WITH DIFFERENT VEHICLE MODELS, SPEEDS AND IMPACT ANGLES, ENVIRONMENTAL TESTS FOR GAS GENERATORS AND SENSORS, EMI TESTS, AND IMPACT TESTS USING HUMAN VOLUNTEERS.
