The development of roundabout design for urban areas in Denmark is outlined. The large number of cyclists were posing a particular problem at roundabouts and involved in an increasing number of accidents. New design guidelines altered priorities on entering roundabouts and slowed traffic down. Details are given of the trial carried out to determine the needs of heavy vehicles and the design guidelines developed. These include a single entrance lane and circulating lane and a separate lane for cyclists. The calculation of roundabout capacity is outlined.
