In 1989, the board of the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) has initiated a three year research program on Road Transport Informatics (RTI), called DARTS (Development of Advanced Road Transport Strategies). The general aim of DARTS is to do research on the possibilities to make more efficient use of the existing infrastructure. Research items in the program were Dynamic Traffic Management and behavioural aspects. The DARTS program has come to an end. A summary of the main results of the DARTS program are: 1. the development of a dynamic traffic simulation model (DYNDART), 2. the results of research of route choice behaviour by using a driving simulator, 3. the use of DYNDART in combination with the results on research on route choice behaviour in several projects, 4. a number of Dynamic Traffic Management related projects, 5. the participation of TNO Institities in several DRIVE-II projects, 6. the cooperation in research between TNO and a number of European research institutes.
