Abstract

An explanation is given of ice formation in road structure and the damage which occurs during thawing process. Various frost criteria are critically discussed and it is possible to replace the concept of "frost-resistant material" by the concept of "frost-resistant state" of a road structure, if the environmental influences are taken into account. In addition, more attention should be paid to the thermal properties of the pavement layers in order to build roads having an adequate bearing capacity and low heat conduction coefficient. Therefore, the properties of various construction materials are compared in the light of their suitability for construction.
