Abstract

This paper describes the development of a new technique to collect data on vehicle trips which remain on the UK motorway system throughout a study area. Information on these motorways through trips was required in order to estimate the reassignment of traffic from the existing M62 round north-west Manchester to the northern section of the proposed Greater Manchester Western and Northern Relief Road. The work has been carried out by G. Maunsell and Partners as part of a commission from the North West Construction Programme Division of the Department of Transport. Traditional origin-destination surveys are not permitted on the motorway network both for safety reasons and because of the possibility of major traffic delays. The paper describes the method and equipment used for the surveys and the subsequent analysis of results. Typical results are included in Section 5 and the conclusions in Section 6.
