This paper describes how the stability of low bearing capacity soils can be improved by the application of reinforcing fabrics. Comparisons are made with traditional methods. An introduction is given to the calculation methods used to design reinforced embankments on low bearing capacity soils. A project using such techniques is also described. Settlements under embankments on compressible soils can be accelerated by the use of vertical drainage. The system and calculation of vertical drainage using plastic band drains is described and illustrated by means of a case study.
