This paper deals with the mobility by car use and the environmental quality in small and medium-sized municipalities, from an aesthetic point of view. It is argued that the quality improvement of residential and traffic areas cannot be achieved by technical solutions alone, but rather by embedding it in the layout of the whole environment. In this context, the importance of political and social principles is emphasized. It is tried to prove that there are much more possibilities for improving the environmental quality than is generally indicated by technicians.
