Abstract

In any examination of the relationship between transport and economic growth it is the process of economic growth that should be central since, apart from transport, there will be other factors that play a part. Moreover, in all of this it is the interaction between economic growth and transport that is of importance. It is for this reason – in order to gain insight into the significance of transport and transport policy for economic growth – that the MOBILEC model is used. This model describes the relations between economy, mobility, infrastructure and other regional characteristics. On the basis of this model the production elasticities of the various transport modes per region are quantified so that their significance for economic growth may be established. Subsequently, with the help of the model, simulations of the growth of the economy and mobility are created on the basis of four scenarios that relate to the dynamic balance which exists between the economy, transport conditions and the environment. The results demonstrate that the significance that transport and transport policy has for economic growth is quantitatively limited. That does not alter the fact that according to the model adopted, transport is a necessary precondition for production. (Author/publisher) De literatuurlijst staat niet op de website vermeld.
