Abstract

In this paper the basic assumptions of the models for preventive behavioural change are discussed as well as their merits and shortcomings. Based on this analysis, alternatives for behavioural modification are proposed. Behaviour can be triggered, extinguished or avoided without the necessity of people being made conscious of a particular problem. The effect of interventions in the environment in terms of regulating behaviour (interventions in the social environment, e.g. through the provision of incentives for good driving behaviour) and social norms (through modelling, e.g. via commitment procedures) is extensively commented upon. Furthermore, some recommendations for applied research and interventions concerning the improvement of safe traffic behaviour are given. (A)
