Abstract

This study adresses the question as to what extent background screens and the alternate black and white stripes of the supports enhance the conspicuity of traffic light installations. It could be shown that the application of a screen may increase the conspicuity of the installation by a factor of 2, on the average. Adding stripes to the light support turned to be less effective; that is, a gain in conspicuity of ca.20%, in the absence of a screen, and non at all, when the screen was present.
