Abstract

During 1988 156 road users lost their lives in the Neth- erlands because they failed to negotiate a bend in the road; 950 road users were so severily injured in such accidents that they were admitted to hospital. In most cases the driver has lost control over his vehicle or the vehicle has colleded with a dangerous obstacle as a tree, a lighting column or a ditch. The main cause of such accidents was driving too fast due to insufficient experience or driving skill, limited information on the presence and the geometry of the bend, bad visibility, use of alcohol, sleep or fatigue.
