Abstract

This article describes the road transport and inland navigation sectors in the netherlands from an economic point of view. These sectors play an important role in the trade between partners in the economic process. They are not only involved in trade within the netherlands but also in imports and exports of goods and even in trade between countries outside the netherlands. The geographical location of the netherlands in the middle of the main economic centres contributes greatly to this. Special attention is paid to the economic characteristics of the two sectors such as production value, value added, employment, and contribution to the balance of payments. The interaction between these sectors and the rest of the economy is described. This interaction can not only be seen as the impact of main economic developments on the transport sector, but also as the extent to which transport itself contributes to economic activity in other sectors. All these elements are described for road transport and inland navigation separately.
