Abstract

The effects of the price decrease in public transport in Apeldoorn May 2001 in Apeldoorn an experiment with respect to price started. Prices in public transport have been decreased and frequency has been increased. Goal is to increase the number of travellers with at least 10% and to realise a shift in modal shift in favour of public transport at the expense of car .Research results show that the increase of the number of travellers is higher than aimed at. The share of public transport in modal split has increased. Besides, the costs of the experiment appear to be considerably lower than expected. It is concluded that an investment of € 4,- per person per year extra will enable Apeldoorn to offer its inhabitants a price decrease, a frequency increase and an increase of comfort (it is possible to buy the ticket in the bus).
