Abstract

By encouraging the use of the bicycle, car traffic can be decreased not only in the central but also in the peripheral parts of cities. Looking at the average trip lengths of the transport modes, we may conclude that the bicycle's share in urban traffic could be much greater. To this end, bicycle facilities must be considerably extended and improved. But the first improvement needed is more effective prevention of bicycle theft, not only near the home, but also at the work place.
