Abstract

Bicycle helmets are not obligatory in The Netherlands. This report presents the results of a qualitative, psychological study into the perception and behaviour of the voluntary wearing of a bicycle helmet. General cyclists wear no helmet, sometimes children do wear them, and most sport cyclists use a helmet, recreational cyclists often do not use a helmet. The attitude to wear a helmet was measured during special tests, and some recommendations are presented to stimulate the use of a bicycle helmet.
