Abstract

Indirect impacts of infrastructure : application of the REMI-model on the corridor Haarlemmermeer - Almere. In practice much discussion is on the indirect impacts of infrastructure, like the impacts on employment, productivity and migration. Since 2002 ECORYS applies the REMI-model to determine these impacts. It is a so-called spatial equilibrium model based on input-outputtables that estimates impacts at the regional and national level. Input for the calculations are travel time and travel cost changes as a consequence of a project. In this paper we describe how the model functions and show its possibilities by describing the calculations made for the corridor Haarlemmermeer – Almere. The paper pays in detail attention to the impacts on employment, productivity, regional and national production, migration and housing prices. The paper shows that REMI is a good model to determine these impacts. By this the model is a valuable addition to the range of instruments to determine the indirect impacts of infrastructure.
