This paper contains some introductory remarks about the use of the information theory in trip distribution modelling. We start with a primer on the statistical information theory. According to this theory the most probable trip distribution is the one that supplies a minimal amount of information. It is demonstrated that there are several ways to calculate this minimal amount of information. One way results in the entropy maximising method. Another results in the information gain minimising method. The approach resulting in entropy maximization is only a special case of the approach resulting in information gain minimization.
