Abstract

In research the role of experience and force of habit in the proces of modal choice has been underestimated. Further insight into these matters could be of great importance in selecting and developing arrangements to limit the (random) use of cars. In order to give the initial impetus to investigations into the actual influence of behavioural experiences on the travel mode decision process a study has been carried out of the influence of the very first experiences young people have had with using a car independently. At each of the levels of experience there are two main research subjects. Firstly, the influence of experience on travelling behaviour in general and on the use of certain transport modes in particular. Secondly, what influence does experience have on the attitudes towards the various transport modes.
