Abstract

This paper summarizes how far from analysis of measurements on rural roads in 1973 and 1977 spot speeds of passenger cars appear to be affected by road design characteristics. Hypotheses and measurement techniques considering 7 road properties are introduced. In linear regression analysis average spot speeds and speeds exceeded by 15% of the drivers show significant correlation with road visibility distance, lateral clearance and bendiness.
