The influence of road and personal characteristics on the credibility of 80 km/hour speed limits; An explorative study. Speed is a central road safety factor. Many motorists drive too fast, and many exceed the speed limit. At the same time, the percentage of offenders on some roads is considerably larger than on other roads, even though their limits are the same. This is assumed to be caused by, among other things, the (in)credibility of the limit. A credible speed limit is one that is seen by motorists as being logical because it fits the road layout and situation. This explorative study has examined which features of the road and its immediate surroundings affect the credibility of an 80 km/hour speed limit on rural distributor roads. It was also examined to what extent the credibility of a limit depends on road users' personal characteristics. The study is a first attempt to make the term 'credible speed limits' more concrete so that it can be put into practice.
