Based on the statement that a traffic-regulations knowledge test ought to be directed towards concrete driver behaviour, several knowledge tests are compared. All tests ask the same questions, although in a different manner. The tests are compared with respect to their difficulty, their homogeneity, the impact of intelligence and different sorts of training on the tests and their dependence on real driving performance. It is concluded that a knowledge test, making use of pictures of real-world traffic situations and asking simple questions about real driving behaviour, meets the requirements better than the knowledge test which is still in use with the central bureau for the issue of driving ability licenses in The Netherlands.
