Lecture read during the Study Days of the Section of Civil Engineers and the section for traffic and traffic Engineering of the royal Netherlands Institutions of Engineers at Essen on 17 and 18 April 1969. An outline is given how the polycentric structure of the Ruhr district affected the historical growth of short-distance public transport in the conurbation has been combined as regards organizations as well as operation in order to be to fulfill its task at present and in the future in a proper way. A plan is made for an infrastructure for all sectors of public transport which should be separated from that for private transport.
