Abstract

The environmental module of the Mobility Explorer was developed by TNO Institute of Spatial Organization by order of the Dutch Organization for Energy and Environment (NOVEM). This module forecasts the environmental consequences of changes in mobility. This report contains an explanation of and a manual for the environmental module of the Mobility Explorer. The Mobility Explorer is a strategic, medium term forecasting model that can be used on both a national and a regional scale in the Netherlands. With the help of the Mobility Explorer, calculations can be made of, among other things, the number of both vehicle kilometres and of passenger kilometres by train, urban public transport, and public transport in regional rural areas. Calculations can be made of the energy use and the emission of six dangerous exhaust fumes by the total mobility of persons per day distinguished into mobility by car and public transport use per day. These exhaust fumes are: (1) carbon dioxide; (2) sulphur dioxide; (3) carbon monoxide; (4)hydrocarbons; (5) oxides of nitrogen; and (6) aerosols. The environmental module takes into account the expected environmental-technical improvements and changes in the transport system. It is possible for the user to change these data of scenarios in a variable input file. With the help of the Mobility Explorer and the environmental module, the user himself can calculate the effects upon the energy consumption and environmental grants of the changes in mobility in the Netherlands. It is pointed out that the environmental module is not yet as flexible as the Mobility Explorer itself. The starting year of the mobility development used has to be the year 1987 and the prognosis should concern the whole of the Netherlands.
