The importance of the North-South connection for the agglomeration and for the region of Amsterdam is discussed. The connection, a rapid transit system, a rapid tramway, can play a structural role in the Amsterdam region. High traffic flows can be managed both effectively and quickly. The main economic locations can be connected. This allows a good interaction a spatial equilibrium throughout the agglomeration. This will encourage the use of present public transport network, and there will be fewer cars in the city centre.
